2010-2011 PSU Dance Tryout Information

Portland State University is adding a Dance Team!

The main function of the PSU Dance Team is to support and represent PSU athletics. We will perform dances on the sidelines of all football and some basketball games. We are looking for 8-12 performers with a strong technical background but can still shake it with the best of them!

Tryouts

Cost:   $25.00

Date:   May 2nd, 2010

Location: Room 207,
Stott Center, PSU Campus

Schedule: 8:30-9:00 - Registration

            9:00-9:15 - Introductions/Explanation of the team

            9:15-9:30 -Warm-Up

            9:30-10:30 - Technique

            10:30-11:30 - Learn combination

            11:30 - 12:00- Break

            12:00-1:00 - Perform combination/technical skills

What to wear: Tight black pants and a tank top or sports bra

Dance/Pom Team Expectations

* 1-2 mandatory practices a week
* 3-4 workouts a week outside of team practices
* Attend all games/fundraisers/appearances
* Team members must be enrolled at Portland State University or be "Co-Admitted" through Chemeketa CC, Clackamas CC, Mt. Hood CC, Portland CC, or Clark College with a minimum of nine credits per term starting Fall 2009 and must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA. 2010-2011 PSU Stunter Tryout Information

Cost: $10.00

Friday, April 23rd from 6:30-10:00pm at the
Stott Center, PSU Campus, Small Gym

  • Females will learn a cheer and a dance that will be performed on the 2nd day of tryouts
  • Males will have individual interviews
  • Females and males will have approximately 45 minutes starting at 9:00pm to partner stunt

Saturday, April 24th from 10:00am-6:00pm (Females) and 1:00pm-6:00pm (Males) at the Stott Center, PSU Campus, Small Gym

  • Females will have an approximate time to arrive between 10:00am and 12:30pm for an individual interview
  • Females will be evaluated on their dance, cheer, tumbling and parter stunting abilities from 1:00pm-5:00pm
  • Males will be judged on their tumbling and partner stunting abilities from 1:00pm-5:00pm
  • At approximately 5:30pm, after judges' deliberation, team announcements will be made and a team meeting will be held with the new squad

Cost: $10.00/session

Thursday, April 1st, 8th & 22nd from 8-10:00pm at StyleShock Cheer & Dance*

  • Partner stunting will be taught and developed
  • Gym space available to practice tumbling and limited spotting will be available

Open Gym Dates:

Cost: $5.00/session

Every Tuesday through April 20th (except April 13th) from 9:00-11:00pm at StyleShock Cheer & Dance*

  • Open gym time to practice stunting and tumbling

Tryout Requirements:

Males-

  • Men will be judged on an interview, partner stunting and tumbling ability
  • Tumbling will be a portion of the overall score, but not required
  • Previous cheerleading experience in high school or college is preferred, but not required
  • Toss hands, stretch, full-down (athletic ability, strength and coordination will be considered for those new to partner stunting)
  • Men need to be in good physical condition, be clean cut and have good character

Females-

  • Ladies will be judged on an interview, a cheer, a dance and their partner stunting and tumbling ability
  • Standing back handspring on hard wood floor (unspotted)
  • Toss hands, stretch, full-down
  • Excellent cheer motion technique
  • Exceptional rhythm & dance ability
  • Ladies need to be in good physical condition, be clean cut and have good character

*Please note these are minimum requirements. Most female athletes that make the team will likely perform round-off, backhandspring, backtuck and many will perform standing backtucks. Also, it is not required to have experience as a partner stunting or flying. Progress and body control will be determined at open gyms, tryout clinics and tryouts. If you need to work on tumbling or partner stunting, please contact your local gymnastics or cheerleading gym for group and/or private instruction.

 

General Stunt Line Make-Up & Information:

  • Approximately 8-10 female athletes and 8-10 male athletes will make the team
  • The "top six" stunt couples will be eligilble for scholarships ranging from $750-1500 per year. All other athletes on the team will be considered alternates and may or may not be required to cheer or perform at certain events
  • Team will learn and practice a 2:30 minute routine. It will be performed at a basketball game, local exhibitions and local competitions.
  • There is no cost to be involved in the program. All costs will be covered by the athletic department budget and through team fundraising efforts. There will be a $100 cash deposit required at uniform issue, deposit will be returned when athlete's uniform is returned.
  • During the school year, most practices will be held from 8:00-10:30pm during the week.

 

Expectations for all Stunters

  • Workout at least 4 times per week during the summer and keep a log of activities.
  • Attend every practice starting August 16th, 2010, including a 2-day commuter camp on August 21st-22nd at Portland State held by NCA.
  • Team members will attend all assigned games, community appearances and fundraisers.
  • Team members must be enrolled at Portland State University or be "Co-Admitted" through Chemeketa CC, Clackamas CC, Mt. Hood CC, Portland CC, or Clark College with a minimum of nine credits per term starting Fall 2009 and must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA.   • Team committements will take priority over other cheerleading teams, social engagements or  extracurricular activities.
  • Athletic and/or team code of conduct will be signed and followed.

Expectations for "Top Six" stunt couples that are eligible for scholarships:

  • Cheer at all home football games
  • Cheer at assigned women's volleyball games
  • Cheer at all home men’s and women’s basketball games (including assigned holiday games)
